TERRA FEMME (USA 2021, 62 min, režie Courtney Stephens)
The film screening, accompanied by a live voice-over of its director Courtney Stephens, is organized in collaboration of ArtMap, Documentary Monday, Fresh Eye and Tranzit.cz as part of the film series „Cultural Wars“.
The film is introduced by the short artistic video created by the Czech visual artist Alžběta Bačíková Love Letter / Milostný dopis (la chambre X). After the screening, a discussion with the director will be held and moderated by the journalist Tomáš Plocek.
“What does the narrative of exploration offer women?” This question has framed Courtney Stephens’s study of women’s amateur travelogues, which comes to fruition, following live lecture-performances, in this long-awaited film. Composed entirely of archival material and home movies from the 1920s to the 1950s, Terra Femme explores the emancipatory power women found in newly available personal cameras, and the association this self-expression had with gender roles, the rise of a leisured, white middle class, and imperialism.
