Image versus RefugeeMay 14, 2019
Since 2015, the theme of the “refugee crisis” has dominated Czech media, stirring all kinds of emotions. In the past years, it has become a significant mover of political election results and the transformation of social stances and values both locally and internationally. It shows how significant and powerful a tool the verbal and visual images spreading via speeches in public political space, in the media and on social media are, and how these images literally “come alive” in our thoughts, feelings and acts as agents of social change.
As a collaboration between Fresh Eye, Goethe-Institut and its project Shared Cities: Creative Momentum and the Center of Media Studies at the Faculty of Social Sciences at Charles University in Prague, the program presents three perspectives from the field of media analysis, visual analysis and communication practice, looking for an answer to the fundamental question: What photographic and verbal images accompany the figures of refugees and migrants in local media and what stereotypes and emotions are linked to them?
