Image versus Visual Anthropology

April 23, 2013

What are the pros and cons of using visual tools in anthropological research? Will it do to put retro Polaroids and cameras in the hands of “innocent” natives and observe their perspective of perception of their environment, or is it a deep-rooted stereotype that is no more valid? How to employ visual anthropology to explore global visual communication, the modern urban environment or the behavior of social media users? What is really “visual anthropology”?
